此 string 非彼 string,叫你 “string the beans” 不是叫你做針線活!

回家的好處是可以重溫家裡的書房,而在回顧自己小時候學英文的兒童讀物時,發現了值得推薦給 SherryTalk 讀者們的糊塗女傭 Amelia Bedelia

由美國作家 Peggy Parish 創作的 Amelia Bedelia 是一系列美國兒童讀物的主角和書名。書中 Amelia Bedelia 是一名女傭,因為她總是把雇主對她說的話做 “literal”的解釋,也就是照字面上的解讀去執行,因此鬧出許多烏龍和笑話。不過最後她總是能通過高超的烹飪技巧化解尷尬,讓對方因為美食太好吃而不計較她犯的錯。

閱讀 Amelia Bedelia 系列讀物是件相當有趣的事,因為你會忽然意識到英文裡有好多有趣的慣用詞,也有很多同音卻不同義的詞。

雖然 Sherry 主編有好多年沒有再讀過 Amelia Bedelia,不過一提起這名糊塗女傭,主編還是可以馬上想起幾個記憶深刻的詞句喔。像是 Amelia Bedelia 去做一天代課老師的時候,老師給她留字條要她先 “call the roll”,她並沒有做她應該做的「點名」,而是拿出一個麵包捲,然後去呼喊這個 “roll”。可以想像點名的時候老師不點名,而是趴在地上叫麵包捲「麵包捲!麵包捲!」的情景嗎?

另一個例子是 “string the beans”,意思是幫豆子去頭尾抽絲 。那 Amelia Bedelia 又是怎麼 string the beans 呢?這名糊塗女傭清洗完豆子之後,拿了細繩 (string/名詞) 穿針,再把豆子「用線穿成一串」(string/動詞)。哈哈,被打敗了。

作者 Peggy Parish 一開始是老師,後來雖然不再教書,卻始終參與有關教育的工作,包括參加電視節目討論學前教育和兒童讀物,以及撰寫兒童讀物和評論專欄等。Parish 如此解釋自己寫的兒童讀物,她說:

Children’s rights are taken away from them when they enter school. What I try to show teachers is that all the skills needed to read can be taught outside of textbooks. Today’s children are not going to read what they are not interested in. And if a positive attitude toward reading is not developed during the first three years of school, it is virtually impossible to develop it later.

兒童的權利在他們上學時就被剝奪了。我試圖向老師們展示的是,閱讀所需的所有技能,都可以在非教科書的課本之外的讀物中學習。現在的孩子們不會閱讀他們不感興趣的東西。而且,如果在開始上學的頭三年沒有讓孩子對閱讀產生積極的態度,那麼以後就幾乎不可能發展 [他們對閱讀的興趣]。”
